A Pit bull?!?!
"Why a Pit bull?" Was the most common response from our friends and family as we told them we were thinking of adopting one.
We began our research knowing we wanted to adopt a dog regardless of the breed as long as it could live happily in a city environment. We talked with various professionals and friends, researched the world wide web, read books, and watched dog related programs on T.V.
We found out that the American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT), regardless of their age, usually get the death sentence as soon as they arrive at the pound. We decided we would adopt one of these historic American dogs and give it a second (or maybe first) chance at a life in a good home.
Our compassion was not the only factor which weighed into our decision. We were looking for a medium to large sized, short-haired dog which wouldn't shed too much and require a lot of grooming.
We looked around and ended up with a 5 month old APBT/lab mix last December. We named her "Daisy". You can follow her story through Daisy's Diary links.
Pits and other bully breeds are just misunderstood. We are quick to blame the dog (breed) not the handler. They are not easy to handle because they are stubborn, not because they are stupid or even worse, aggressive. They are great family dogs, loyal companions, and excellent running partners! Our Daisy is a snuggle bunny who loves playing with other dogs in the dog park.
It's not been easy training Daisy due to her skittishness- everything seemed to scare her. People are surprised when they find out that she is a pit mix because her personality just doesn't fit the stereotype of her breed.
There are lots of people who still have that negative image of this wonderful breed, so we decided to start this website to educate people and to provide a place for all pit bulls lovers in the city to come together.
We plan to have events where the rescue groups, trainers, and owners can meet and work together to promote adoption of our beloved pit bulls, to fight against dog fighting or to simply have our dogs play together!
In this website, you'll find information and links about:
- dog friendly places and reviews
- dog services and supplies
- recipes and links for home made food and treats
- pit bull rescue organizations
- and whatever you want to share with others like yourselves!!
Join Daisy's friends to tell about your dog. Share the good adopted dog stories and the challenges you've encountered and how you might have overcome them.
We suggest you kindly share your photos! We do have a few stories of our own to tell since it's everyday that something unusual happens!
If you live in the Chicago area, we'd appreciate any reviews on dog parks and other dog friendly places around the city. If you are a rescue group wanting to highlight one of your adoptable dogs on our website, we welcome that as well.
Let us know if you are having adoption events, looking for foster homes or just looking for a play date for your bully friend. Daisy would just love that!
Even though we are pit lovers, we are dog lovers first and we welcome all breeds to participate in our events, blogs and play dates. Daisy gets along with any dog as long as they will run with her in the park!
