Pit Bull Blog: Daisy's Letter To Michael Vick

Hi, Mr. Michael Vick,

My name is Daisy and I am a proud American Pit Bull Terrier.

I am respectfully writing this letter to you because I just wanted to say a few things.
This is not a letter of hate.
My mom told me that you had done some real bad things to my friends and you had to go to prison for it. She also told me that you lost everything: your NFL career, all your money, your dignity and most importantly, your freedom.
I can relate because I sat in a cage for the first 6 months of my life.
It's awful, isn't it?

sweet dreams with my toy!

You see, some humans give us pit bulls a real bad reputation. We are labeled "vicious", "aggressive", "turning against owners" ( I don't even know what that means!) etc.
Lucky for me, my parents didn't believe any of that and gave me a chance at a normal dog life. Unfortunately, most of my friends are not so lucky.
Mom told me that Pit Bulls were great family dogs in the early 20th century because we are very smart, very athletic and super loyal to our owners. While we haven't changed, the way some humans treat us has.

still a working dog (shhh, petco shopping day)

In the public opinion, no longer are we the hard-working, cart-pulling, farm- helping, nanny dogs, we are now drug lord protecting, blood thirsty, child-killing vicious dogs. How fair is that? Just look at my face!!
Bad humans took advantage of our great traits just so they could make some money.
Did you need money? You should have just asked. I would have shared my food and toys with you anytime!
Did you need friends? I would have been your best friend. Your dogs would have been far better friends to you than those so called "friends" who led you astray. If you had just given your dogs the love and support they deserved, they would have been your best friends. That's what we pit bulls live for!

I share my toy with friends

My parents were not impressed with your apology.
You said you were sorry and there's no excuse for what you've done.
You said you were not a leader in the sense that you let the scene go on instead of shutting it down. Yet, you were a leader on the football field.
Didn't you actively participate in the torturing and killing of my friends?
You were never just the money man. That's why we don't believe that you are truly sorry.

Yes, you have paid your debt to human society for your crime, but to reverse our reputation that you helped perpetuate, it's going to take a lot more than saying sorry and a few obligatory speaking engagements. It's not just about the physical harm you personally caused. It's the fact that the damage Illegal dog fighting causes is so much deeper.
What about those kids you are influencing? Maybe 1% of them can be Michael Vick the NFL quarterback.
What about us pit bulls? Did I mention Breed Specific Legislation? There are lots of places in which I can never live. Then there are also the places that we are not even allowed to participate in off-leash activities. Even as I write this letter, there are places that are trying to ban me and my friends.

I love my daddy!

Millions of my friends, who have not a mean bone in their bodies are euthanized for no reason other than they are pit bulls.
Now that you've been afforded your second chance, please work hard to make the same second chance available to my friends.
Please use this second chance as a wake up call, and do the right thing everyday for yourself and for us pit bulls.
You have the power to save us. For every dog you've harmed, you can save 100! We deserve just the same love and devotion as any other breed.
Sorry I'm a little long winded here, so here are my final words.

I can't speak for my parents but I, "Downtown" Daisy the Pit Bull, forgive you in a true Pit Bull fashion. I just have to believe there's good in everyone. That doesn't mean I'll forget.
I would love to see you donate a lot of your money and time, fight against BSL, and be a true advocate for all bully breeds.
Thank you for reading.

Sincerely,

"Downtown" Daisy the Pit Bull.

p.s: Good luck in life. My parents will see you at Soldier Field in November. GO BEARS!!

I am very patient with puppies
